At first, Drifters caught my attention when a friend of mine gave me a link to the manga written and illustrated by Kouta Hirano. Thus I was already a fan of the story before watching the anime.
Even though the manga has 6 volumes and is still publishing more, Drifters only has one anime adaptation. Hoods Drifters Studio produced the anime. 12 episodes and 3 OVA aired from 7th October 2016 to 2018.

What Is The Storyline Of Drifters?
The story started in 1600. Toyohisa Shimazu was fighting with his amazing sword skill and guarded his troops to return back from their enemy. After a while, he was severely wounded because of the war and lost consciousness.
When he woke up, he found himself in a corridor of numerous doors and Murasaki told him to choose a door. Suddenly, he was sucked into another world. Soon he found Nobunaga Oda and Yoichi Suketaka Nasu.
Toyohisa formed a group with them to help the dwarfs and fight the evil king of the continent. They found out that they were summoned to fight a war against ‘the Ends’ which includes many more cruel monsters.
What Is Special About Drifters?
The interesting fact is most of the main characters in this anime were famous warriors of Japan. Warlords, Archer and so many other fighters from different wars who were known to be dead in the present world were summoned to this world war of another dimension after their death.
So, basically, even in the afterlife, they were battling against the evildoers. Although the anime depicted brutality from humankind to the dwarfs or the Ends eliminating humans, the light humorous dialogues always made the seriousness of the situation lighter.
And you can say that the anime had a historical background as well since it showed Japan’s ancient warriors and culture.
Is Drifters A Good Anime?
Since the anime is from the dark fantasy and adventure fiction genre, it contains various violence, war, and cruelty. I loved the storytelling because the plot went on like peeling an onion. You will be hooked on the story to know more about this life after death with every episode.
Is The Black King In Drifters Jesus?
Many fans assume that the Black King, who is the leader of the Ends, is Jesus Christ. They think that the marks in his hands are from crucifixion and he has the healing power just like Jesus.
Personally, I think he is just a fictional character.
