Which one do you think is the most successful anime of all time? In my opinion, it has to be DEATH NOTE. Even after 15 years, I don’t think any anime could surpass its popularity.

The story was about a bored God of Death, his Death Note, a mass murderer high school student, and a detective who solved the case. The storytelling, suspense, character development, and even the music mesmerized fans for all these years. And like many other fans, I was also curious about the sequel.

Well, in this article, I am going to talk about the possibilities of releasing Death Note Season 2. So, stay tuned with me.

First Release of Death Note:

Death Note was adapted by the famous Madhouse Studio. The Manga by the same name was created by Tsugumi Ohba and illustrated by Takeshi Obata. In October 2006 the anime premiered and ended after releasing 37 episodes.

What Happened in Death Note Season 1?

The classic story of the God of Death or Shinigami and the human world was the original plot of this anime. Sinigami Ryuk became bored with his ancient job of taking peoples’ lives. So, to spice things a little, he dropped his book of death or ‘Death Note’ in the human world.

In the course of events, a bright high school student Light Yagami found the notebook. From the moment he touched the book, he was able to see the Shinigami as well. Ryuk told him, the founder of this book would have the ability to kill people while obeying the rules written there.

Light started utilizing the power by killing all the criminals shown on TV and by spying over his father’s documents. Light’s father was a detective. So, he had to hide his identity and continued his mission of making the world free from criminals. His fans gave him the name ‘Kira’ or killer.

But this mass murder became a headache for the police department. They sought help from well-known detective L. After that, how L and the Kira task force found out the culprit and put an end to this madness became history. No matter how many days have passed, this story never gets old.

What Are The Possibilities Of Releasing A Second Season?

To the present day, no official announcements were made by the production house or the creators about the renewal. Therefore, I can’t tell you the exact release date of Death Note Season 2. But before that, let’s analyze the possibilities of another season.

Source Material:

Madhouse animated the whole 108 chapters of the Manga. To solve all the mysteries of the notebook, the production studio extracted all the contents from the source material.

However, in February 2020, a spin-off manga named ‘Death Note: Special One Shot’ was published in Jump Square Magazine. Even though the content is not enough to produce another giant season like the previous one, an OVA with a few episodes can be made as a standalone.

Sales and Profit:

Over 30 million copies of the manga were circulating all around the world in 2015. The anime also helped to get a huge profit and fame for Madhouse.

Social Media Popularity:

5.1M posts were published on Instagram using the ‘death note’ hashtag.

A bunch of Facebook Fan communities had been formed by the Death Note fans since 2006. Over 1,270,077 people liked one of the pages.

A year ago, through the Crunchyroll channel of YouTube, 933K people had watched the trailer of the first anime season.

Looking at the massive fan base and popularity, we can assume that there are still some chances left for another installment.

The Plot of Death Note Season 2:

Since there is no source material left from the original manga, the only content left to animate is Special One-Shot. As the manga goes, Ryuk has returned to earth after 10 years of the Kira incident. He is trying to find someone with the same IQ and intelligence as Light so that he can witness some interesting incidents again.

Now, even after receiving all the powers, the protagonist Minoru Tanaka decides to sell the book. With the help of Sakura TV, he arranges an auction and sells the notebook to the USA president. But eventually, Tanaka has to face an unexpected event because of the 3 new rules of Shinigami Ryuk.

Ratings:

DEATH NOTE was rated 8.63/10 on MAL, 9.0/10 on IMDb, and 4.6/5 on Crunchyroll.

Awards:

This anime has been nominated many times. In 2007, the creators received Tokyo Anime Awards for Notable Entry in the TV category.
